According to the authors of the July, 2016 Health Affairs, the majority of the United States have drug monitoring programs. The two states that do not participate in this program are Missouri and New Hampshire. These programs collect information from pharmacies and report the analyzed information to physicians. The objective is to reduce the amount of doctor shopping. When comparing the two articles, as the overdose drug opioid deaths increased in 2014, the amount of drug monitoring programs increased. With this retrospective study, the authors reviewed the data and reported that the implementation of the programs increased while the drug overdosed deaths decreased. Florida worked with the federal government and took action and closed a pill mill operation. With this action, Florida saw a decrease in opioid-related overdose deaths (Patrick, et al., 2016, p. 2). In summary, as the CDC saw the opioid-related deaths as an epidemic from 2000 to 2014, the states saw a need in reducing deaths. At the state level, a drug monitoring program provided pharmacies to work with the provider and send notifications of patient’s prescriptions, thus eliminating doctor shopping and pill mills. This type of program is an example of how partnerships between healthcare systems and communities improved for the health of the community. A Farewell To Arms Analysis Essays - English-language Films A Farewell to Arms Analysis John Stubbs' "Love and Role Playing in A Farewell to Arms" John Stubbs' essay is an examination of the defense which he believes Henry and Catherine use to protect themselves from the discovery of their insignificance and "powerlessness...in a world indifferent to their well being..." He asserts that "role-playing" by the two main characters, and several others in the book, is a way to escape the realization of human mortality which is unveiled by war. Stubbs thinks that Hemingway utilized role-playing as a way to "explore the strengths and weaknesses of his two characters." Stubbs says that by placing Henry's ordered life in opposition to Catherine's topsy-turvy one, and then letting each one assume a role which will bring them closer together, Hemingway shows the pair's inability to accept "the hard, gratuitous quality of life." Stubbs begins by showing other examples, notably in In Our Time and The Sun Also Rises, in which Hemingway's characters revert to role-playing in order to escape or retreat from their lives. The ability to create characters who play roles, he says, either to "maintain self-esteem" or to escape, is one Hemingway exploits extraordinarily well in A Farewell to Arms and therefore it "is his richest and most successful handling of human beings trying to come to terms with their vulnerability." As far as Stubbs is concerned, Hemingway is quite blatant in letting us know that role-playing is what is occurring. He tells that the role-playing begins during Henry and Catherine's third encounter, when Catherine directly dictates what is spoken by Henry. After this meeting the two become increasingly comfortable with their roles and easily adopt them whenever the other is nearby. This is apparent also in that they can only successfully play their roles when they are in private and any disturbance causes the "game" to be disrupted. The intrusion of the outside world in any form makes their role-playing impossible, as evidenced at the race track in Milan, where they must be alone. The people surrounding them make Catherine feel uncomfortable and Henry has to take her away from the crowd. He goes on to describe how it is impossible for them to play the roles when they are apart and how they therefore become more dependent upon each other's company. Stubbs goes on to explain how, "neither mistakes role-playing for a truly intimate relationship, but both recognize that it can be a useful device for satisfying certain emotional needs." He says that originally Henry and Catherine are playing the "game" for different reasons but eventually move to play it as a team. Henry is role-playing to regain the sense of order he has lost when he realizes the futility of the war and his lack of place in it. Catherine is role-playing to deal with the loss of her fiance and to try to find order in the arena of the war. When they are able to role-play together, "the promise of mutual support" is what becomes so important to them as they try to cope with their individual human vulnerability. He also analyzes the idyllic world introduced early in the story by the priest at the mess and later realized by Henry and Catherine in Switzerland. They fall fully into their roles when they row across the lake on their way to their idealized world. The fact that they actually are able to enter this make-believe world strengthens their "game" and allows it to continue longer than it would have otherwise. And once they are in this new world they adopt new roles which allow them to continue their ruse. They also need to work harder to maintain the "game" because far from the front they are both still aware the war is proceeding and they are no longer a part of it. The world in which they exist in reality (!) is not conducive to role-playing because it tries repeatedly to end their "game". Stubbs manages to uncover numerous inezces in which the two are role-playing and he makes a very interesting case that this is exactly what they are doing and not just his imagination reading into the story. A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks â€Å"A Walk to Remember â€Å" Nicholas Sparks, one of the New York Time Best Selling Author wrote his third novel entitled A Walk to Remember. It had been published in the year 1999 of October under Warner Books. The book is about the story of a 57 year old guy, and how he found his greatest love back when his seventeen. He tells how this love changes him in a way he didnt think he should be. The novel is written dedicated to his family, especially to his sister Danielle Sparks Lewis who become his inspiration in writing the novel. The story is fictional but some scenes are based on real life situation. He applied the experience of its own sister. Synopsis: The story is about a guy named Landon Carter, who is at the age of 57. It’s about how his life changes back when he was seventeen. He was Landon a reclusive guy, but everything changes when he asked Jamie Sullivan to be his date on their school party. Jamie is a good girl. She always carries a bible and always wore her ugly sweater. They are totally different but love is really great. The day he came to ask Jamie, he didnt know that it will be the start of something new. Something he didnt look forward to happen. On how he fall in love with someone named Jamie Sullivan. Reaction: The first time Ive got interested about A Walk to Remember is when Im in my third year of high school. I always read stories in wattpad and the author always mention it. They said that it was a great movie which inspired them to write their own stories. That time I didnt know it was a novel because they always mentioned it as a movie. I got a chance to watch it during my senior high, indeed it was great. Now, I needed to critic its book. At first, I didnt want to read it because I already know the flow of the story. Whats the use right? But as Ive read the book, I realized that I was so wrong. The movie is truly different from the book. Yes, it has the same concept but the flows of the scenes are entirely different. There are also some scenes that are informational which wasnt shown in the movie. Reading the novel is better than watching its film. You only need to imagine that youre on the story, and imagine everything that is happening. I was astounded on how this novel makes me feel the same emotion when I watch its movie. I even think Ive shown more emotion now that I read it. It feels like it was all brand new. I can still remember this quotation from the book, â€Å"Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous. Love is never rude or selfish. It does not take offense and is not resentful. Love takes no pleasure in other peoples sins, but delights in the truth. It is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and endure whatever comes. This has been my favorite line from the novel. That wasnt a simple quotation, it has a deeper meaning. It gives as an idea on what we need to do with our life. We must know the real purpose why we are living here, in this place. We are not here to focus on ourselves but for us to be part of the others life. To give them happiness, hope, and wisdom is our role in this world. A Walk to Remember wants us to remind that everything has its own purposes. Our life is always on God’s hand. You just need to have faith in him and surrender everything to him. For sure, everything will takes place. This story show how great can love is. Nothing is impossible that even miracle do come true. He is their new teacher in English which is an alumnus of Walton. This educator has a different way of teaching his student. While having their lesson, he asked his students to stand on the desk, he even let them walk in a courtyard with their own way. Keating also instruct them to reap out the pages of their book in poetry. He was the one who motivated the boys to see the world in a different perspective and seize every day of their life. I adore Dead Poets Society for the reason that beyond the appearance is the thought of passion and a purpose driven life. It thought me that achieving all of my goals in life is not just the center of everything because if there is a great things surely there will also be greater and greatest things in life. Invisible by naked eyes but clearly seen by the heart. Just what Mr. Keating said, Yes indeed it is a battle of war and the casualties could be our hearts and souls. I was amazed at every scene because it was my first experience watching a film wherein my focus is not on the characters but what they want to import. I was also caught by this question, What will your verse be? Really, I meditate these words and asked myself if what verse I can contribute to this play. To learn from the experience of the past, to forget what is behind and to savor every moment. Poetry is more than poetry, beyond them is the life. One of the lessons I learn is that we do have different voices and I must strive to find my own voice. Maybe some people find the Dead Poets Society film a weird one but for me as I focus my attention on it, thousands of my emotions is on slide and I cant explain it through words but all I can express is that it is splendid. We must seize every step we take. In our final moments we all realize what life is all about. Dont wait until youre on your deathbed to figure out what matters most. To look things in different way, it’s not really a risk but an adventure and maybe by trying the things we thought is silly can be the better one. Stop acting and show who we really are and what the desires of our hearts are. We can go anywhere and can do anything and were not trapped in this life. Conclusion: I have watched many films but this one is something different. Tough I may say that the quality of the movie is not that good, maybe because it has been shown long time ago, but the message they want to convey is clear. It is something we need to remember and apply in our daily life. It was so interesting, touching, and knowledgeable. As a future mentor, we must really watch this kind of movie. 1.1 Explain the models of practice that underpin equality, diversity and inclusion in own area of responsibility. Equality is to treat all as individuals; to respect race, disability, age, gender, religion, beliefs ,culture and sexual orientation. For all to be open to opportunities, to be treated fairly and respectfully, have rights and equal status in society and for all to reach their full potential. Diversity is to value that we are all unique and yet similar. In case of any medical condition they seek medical intervention for the service users. 1.2 Analyze the potential effects of barriers to equality and inclusion in own area of responsibility There are many barriers to diversity and inclusion. The biggest ones are generally prejudice, culture and upbringing and religious beliefs. Prejudice is â€Å"a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or personal  experience† those creating barriers to recognizing equality of rights for all. Cultural barriers can prevent, for example, consideration of spiritual, relational or dietary needs that do not conform with traditional expectations. Religious belief, where different religious beliefs are not taken into account and minorities are marginalized and not acknowledged. Other significant barriers could be structural, institutional and personal: Structural, where circumstances create or result in barriers People make the assumption about younger adult and consider all young people as a whole category rather than treating them as an individual. This type of stereotyping happens when people lack knowledge about equality and inclusion. The effects of barriers to employees are also high as they are excluded from their human right. Employer can easily discriminate those in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation and culture. 1.3 Analyze the impact of legislation and policy initiatives on the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion in own area of responsibility My work place is committed to the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion in policy and practice. It is committed in equal opportunity and also follows a common standard in respect of Race Relation (amendment) act 2000 in getting contract from council contractors. It also observes the code of practice of Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) in employment. Organization promote equality with respect to age, gender, race, disability religion , sexual orientation and establish a national common standard which is compliant to The Race Relation Act 1976 , as amended by The Race Relations (amended )act 2000. Under this law, organization carries out its function, it has due regard for the necessity to eliminate any unlawful discriminating and promote equal opportunity and harmonious race relation, it also follows the race relation code of practice for the elimination of racial discrimination and promote the equal opportunity in employment as approved by the parliament in 1983. It ensures that all employees and service users with or without disability, irrespective of background are treated equally and compliant to Disability discrimination act 1995. Under the sex discrimination act 1976, any staff  of service users has recourse and protection from any discrimination. Its policy is to protect the staff and service user from discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation under The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003. It ensures that men and women are same as per as pay is concern. Under Equal Pay Act 1970, organization’s policy is to make sure that man and women are treated equally and not discriminated in terms of their pay. To promote equality , diversity and inclusion in policy and practice , my work place also compliant to other legislation like, Human right act 1998, sex discrimination (gender reassignment) regulations 1999, Employment equality (religion belief) regulations 2003 , Disability discrimination amended act 2005, Equality act 2006, Racial and religious hatred act 2006. 2.1 promote equality, diversity and inclusion in policy and practice The organizations where I work promote equality, diversity and inclusion in both policy and practice. Staffs should regularly be reminded the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion in day to day practice. Staff should respect the choice, preference, ethnicity, origin, rights, and wishes of service users. Care staff should be allocated to service user to make sure that continuity of care is maintained. Staff would be selected against the service user in such a way which promotes the social and cultural need of service user. If possible, staff would be selected from same cultural and religious back ground and with same language spoken. Therefore care staff could appropriately relate to service user which ultimately lead to a positive person centered outcome. Care staff should promote independence, liaison with family members, friends, local community link for better social inclusion and to meet the wishes and choices of service users. Care staff would be aware of legislative impact while providing care in respect of religion, race age, disability, gender and sexuality. Race relation act 1976 and protection of harassment act 1997are in place to protect the vulnerable person. Disability discrimination act 2005 is also in place to protect person from discrimination because of disability. Sex discrimination act 1976 is to protect people from discrimination due to sexual orientation. Such other acts like, the Human Rights Act 1998 and Convention on the Rights  of the Child (UN, 1989) are in place to protect people from discrimination. 2.2 Challenge discrimination and exclusion in policy and practice The organizations where I work challenge discrimination and exclusion in both policy and practice. Staffs should regularly be reminded the importance of challenge discrimination and exclusion in day to day practice. In looking at this model I have found that many people have views that based on discrimination and prejudice they are embedded in today’s society, the attitudes and the surrounding environment often focuses on what a person lacks in terms of disability and focuses on condition or illness or a person’s lack of ability. To combat this prejudice within making space we use person centred care planning it is my responsibility to promote the use of this and to ensure that the support workers who deliver it are fully trained to do so. It is also vital that they have a good understanding of the model in order for them to work effectively with a service user. As a Director I am responsible for ensuring that the ethos within my team promotes equality and diversity every day, that the Support that is delivered within making space and any partnership working exercises good practice in this area this could be through training, policy and procedures, support plans, health files, as well as having a good understanding of equality & diversity. The staff are all expected to work in line with the Care Act, Mental Capacity Act 2005. Resolve transport issues so that they do not prevent people from participating in the wider community. Build links with community projects, community centres and schools to increase levels of social contact between  people from different generations. Identify, respect and use people’s skills, including the skills of older people gained in previous employment. Give people ordinary opportunities to participate in the wider community through person-centred care planning. Involve people in service planning and ensure ideas and suggestions are acted upon. We are promoting our service users to participate with the community by attending day centres, drama classes, arts and craft centres, keep in contact with friends and families.

Hard Times by Charles Dickens Research Paper Example Hard Times by Charles Dickens Paper Hard Times by Charles Dickens Paper Essay Topic: Hard Times Woman On the Edge Of Time Brocklehurst finally meets his end after an outbreak of typhus fever, when an inquiry is made into its cause, and it is found that the site is unhealthy and that the quality and quantity of food given to the girls are substandard, among other things. After these facts become public knowledge, Mr. Brocklehurst is shunted into the background and becomes mere treasurer of the school, and a committee replaced his previous position. His stereotyped ideas towards poor people have now become outdated and are no longer accepted. The first time we see Thomas Gradgrind in the novel, he states that Facts alone are wanted in life and this gives us a fair idea of his character. He is an undoubting believer in utilitarianism at the beginning of Hard Times. In the opening chapters, he is speaking at a school, founded by him, which teaches Fact and no more. He describes himself as an eminently practical man, and this is so. Thomas Gradgrind not only teaches the ideals of the utilitarian lifestyle, but also believes in and follows them himself. This practicality, and the matter-of-fact way in which he interprets life is one of the most significant aspects of his character, and becomes very important in his relationship with his children. Dickens physical description of him comes in the very first chapter, when he is attending his school, and addressing its pupils. He is described as having a square wall of a forehead, eyes that found commodious cellarage in two dark caves and a wide, thin and hard set mouth. : Dickens is using the appearance of Gradgrind as the quintessence of his character by making everything about him average and not remarkable. Dickens goes on to describe the rest of his body in the same manner, describing his square coat, square legs, square shoulders. The repetition of the word square is Dickens way of stressing the boredom of his appearance. Dickens clearly does not want us to think that Gradgrind is an amiable or cheerful man. The fact that the description of Gradgrind is made through the eyes of children also influences the readers opinion of him. This is similar in ways to Bronti s description of Brocklehurst, as both men are portrayed as having nothing attractive or fanciful about their appearance, and both are described through the eyes of children. Thomas Gradgrind has a wife and five children, all of whom live at Stone Lodge, a suitably unremarkable house. Mrs. Gradgrind is described as a bundle of shawls as she is a quiet and detached character, who never says or does very much. Of Gradgrinds five children, only two become involved in the novel Thomas and Louisa, the two eldest. Both are raised on the utilitarian doctrine from an early age, but understand nothing of life and love. The first time we encounter them they are, to Gradgrinds extreme disappointment, visiting Slearys Circus which is in town to see what it was like, having experienced nothing similar in their lives. The first time we witness compassion in Gradgrind is when he discovers that Cecilia Sissy Jupe, a pupil at his school who lives with the circus, has been abandoned by her father. Gradgrind decides, much to his friend Mr. Bounderbys dismay, to take her in and raise her. This incident illustrates to us that while he is a man of Fact, Gradgrind is compassionate and does care for other people. Dickens also uses the occasion to show us the difference between Gradgrind and Mr. Bounderby, a much less benevolent man. Although Gradgrind does seemingly do a cruel thing in not allowing Sissy to return to the circus, and forcing her to make up her mind immediately, he is doing what he believes is best for the girl. Sissy, while not as successful in studies as Gradgrind hoped for, is liked by him, and described as an affectionate, earnest, good young woman. A small example of how Gradgrind changes as the novel progresses is the fact that at the beginning of the book, he tells Sissy that Sissy is not a name, dont call yourself Sissy. Call yourself Cecilia. However, by the end of the novel, he himself calls her Sissy, showing that his utilitarian belief has been slackened by the events of the novel, not least Louisas marriage to Mr. Bounderby. Another notable occurrence involving Sissy came earlier in the novel, when Sissy was attending Gradgrinds school. Gradgrind refers to her as girl number twenty, and asks for her to describe a horse. Sissy, although she works with horses every day of her life, hesitates to answer and Gradgrind declares that she is unable to define a horse. Bitzer, however, a model pupil of the utilitarian regime, describes a horse as a Quadruped. Graminivorous. Forty teeth and this is ironic because Bitzer, who has probably never seen a horse in his life, is praised for his description while Sissy, who knows much better than him what a horse is, is accused of being unable to describe one. This is Dickens small way of mocking the utilitarian method of teaching, and mocking Gradgrind for his belief in it. Bounderby does not propose to Louisa, but asks Gradgrind to do it for him. Even at this most important of times in Louisas life, he still considers it a question of tangible fact, quoting statistics of mixed age marriages, and reduces the considerable act of marriage to the mere question Shall I marry him? without any consideration of love. Louisa accepts Bounderbys proposal not for her own sake but for her brothers, him being the only person she truly cares for, although he is described by Dickens as The Whelp due to his heartless attitude towards everyone and everything, including his sister. One of the most redeeming arguments for the decency of Gradgrind is his lack of hypocrisy. Although we realise that his system of education is ultimately damaging to its pupils, Gradgrind subjects his children to that same system, saying in his opening speech in the school this is the principle on which I raise my own children. Even though the children who attend his school come from much less wealthy families to his own, he does not educate them any differently to his own children. If he were similar to Bounderby, who lives in the lap of luxury while accusing the Hands (working class people) of wishing to be fed on turtle soup and venison, with a gold spoon, then we could be more condemning of him. However, as it is, we realise that Gradgrind believes in utilitarianism, and does not subject children to his system for crueltys sake, but for their own. Here lies another difference between Gradgrind and Brocklehurst, as Brocklehurst is a hypocrite, who treats his family much better than the orphaned girls at his school. One failure of Gradgrinds System, which is not wholly understood until the third book of the novel, is the fading decency of Tom (Jnr. ). It is clear right from the beginning of the novel that Tom is the only person who Louisa really cares for. Although even from the beginning we realise that although Tom does not quite hold Louisa in the same high regards, he does care for her. However, as the novel progresses we see his character change. He manipulates Louisas relationship with his employer, Mr. Bounderby, for his own gain, and takes advantage of Louisas love for him by getting money off her. These newly developed character flaws are the result of the upbringing he suffered, during which he had no emotional outlet and no fun. Dickens calls him The Whelp and describes him as a hypocrite, incapable of governing himself and a monster. It is clear that Dickens does not wish us to like Tom, through the language used to describe him. He brags to Mr. Harthouse about the fact that he convinced Louisa to marry Bounderby, in order to make it much easier for him to work for Bounderby. He is altogether an unsavoury, greedy, manipulative character, but the worst was yet to come. When he hits cash-flow problems, and Louisa no longer has the money to support his gambling, he resorts to stealing money from the bank. However, worse even than that, he deliberately implicates an innocent man for his crime, a man who consequently dies. Toms fate is another way in which Dickens criticises the utilitarian upbringing of the children, as it is clear that Toms severe character flaws are a result of a lack of emotional outlet in his childhood. Another important point that can be made about Gradgrind is that during the course of the novel, his character changes. We discover that by the end of the novel, he no longer believes in the utilitarian system he held dear for so long. A number of factors influence this change of opinion and character, not the least important being his children, Tom and Louisa. Both were educated under their fathers system and he believed all was well, however, as the story progresses he comes to realise that neither is happy. Louisa, who married Bounderby for her brothers sake, only comes to realise her unhappiness when Mr. James Harthouse arrives. However the first to give her a clue that her education had been inadequate had been her mother on her deathbed, who said that there is something not an Ology at all that your father has missed, or forgotten. At this stage, Louisa does not understand what she means, but her affair with Mr. Harthouse helps her to understand. He gives her a small vision of what life could be like without Bounderby, through his secret courting of her. Gradgrind is finally enlightened of the unhappiness of Louisa when she comes to visit him and accuses him of robbing me [Louisa] of the immaterial part of my life, the spring and summer of my belief. Although she does not wholly blame him (I dont reproach you, what you have never nurtured in me, you have never nurtured in yourself), her outburst has a profound affect on Gradgrind, as in Louisas downfall he saw the pride of his heart and the triumph of his system, lying, an insensible heap, at his feet. This was the first time he had seen his system fail, and it started him thinking that there is more to life than fact. When Gradgrind finally discovers his sons deception and crime, a change comes over him. He spends a day in his room, considering how the two prides of his System had turned out so wrong, and comes out of the room a different man. He is described as a wiser man, and a better man, than in the days when in his life he wanted nothing but Facts. He even saves his son from the law, an act that involved a confrontation with Bitzer, a former pupil and success of the System. This final change is another of the main redeeming features of Gradgrind, as he learns from his mistakes, and we learn that his other children are not raised merely on Fact. I think that although his actions were indisputably cruel, he learns from these mistakes and in the end, turns out to be an amiable man. The change in Gradgrinds character is the main difference between himself and Mr. Brocklehurst. Although at no point in the novel does Dickens appear to agree with the utilitarian education taught by Gradgrind, and appears to agree with Sleary that the people must be entertained, he does seem to respect Gradgrinds belief in his system, and the fact that in the end, he seems remorseful for all the things he has done. In the final chapter we are told that Gradgrind ends up making his facts and figures subservient to Faith, Hope and Charity, and so we end up liking him more than we did earlier in the novel, when facts alone are wanted in life. Mr. Brocklehurst, on the other hand, does not change, and Bronti seems to despise him as much at the end as she did at the beginning. For these reasons, I think that Thomas Gradgrind is by far the more amiable of the two, and that he should be respected for his integrity, while Brocklehurst should be scorned for his hypocrisy.

This interference doesnt necessarily have to be of a material nature which can be valued in monetary terms but it can be anything which makes the work environment intimidating. Hostile Environment Harassment is also often associated with verbal misconduct which embarrasses or humiliates a victim, which in turn could lead to lower job satisfaction and performance. (Barry Shaw, 1998) Quid-Pro-Quo Harassment is when a person uses his authority in the workplace to seek sexual favors from other employees. In this case rewards and punishments are associated with the compliance the victim (Barry Shaw, 1998). This again leads to a very negative outlook towards job motivation because here the way to the top is not portrayed to be hard work but rather the sexual favors one can do for their supervisors or managers. Besides lower job satisfaction and reduced productivity, sexual harassment hampers the target mentally as well. They lose their self-esteem and blame themselves for what has happened to them (Ackroyd Thompson, 1994). In Pakistan, considering the patriarchal social structure where most companies do not even have policies regarding sexual harassment and some which do, are not implemented or observed properly, women do not even come forward with their problems. They feel shame for what has happened, and might fear seclusion from the society which blames the woman for what has happened and ostracizes her. There is always the matter of honor which is one of the leading causes for suicide in Pakistan. The biggest problem in our society is that we dont accept the fact that sexual harassment exists. Pakistani society, being an Islamic society should be more concerned about this because of the rights and the status Islam gives to women. In Islam women and men are given similar rights and duties. Women are allowed to own property, earn money and to express their opinion. What our society needs is for companies to have strict policies regarding sexual harassment. Sexual harassment should be clearly defined and the ways to proceed with a complaint should also be outlined. Most importantly the policy should also respect the privacy of the victim so that people dont have too much trouble coming forward with their complaints. Mentorship in organizations A mentor is an experienced or more senior person in the organization who gives a junior person special attention, such as giving advice and creating opportunities to assist him or her during the early stages of his or her career (Johns Saks, 1996). From an organizations point of view mentoring makes sure that the company culture and beliefs are transferred from one generation of employees to the next. It provides new employees with the information he needs to know so as to excel within the organization and in the process be an important asset to the company. At the same time she/he learns how to deal with his superiors, peers, etc (Vinnicombe Colwill, 1995). Proper mentorship has been linked to lowered levels of job stress (Johns Saks, 1996). Once again this poses a problem for women because most of the senior people in the organization are men. The problem arises as most of the male mentors are inexperienced when it comes to dealing with women. The problems they faced as they moved up through the organizations hierarchy might be quite different from the ones a woman would face thus the mentors would not be able to provide much help. When mentors undertake an apprentice under their mentorship its usually because they can reflect back to the time they had started work in this organization and they see their own past in the new young employee. So if the new employee is a woman, it is difficult for the mentors to identify themselves with the new employee. (Vinnicombe Colwill, 1995) Besides this whenever there is a lot of interaction between a senior man and a young new female employee people start perceiving their relationship as having a sexual nature (Johns Saks, 1996). This hinders the development of a productive working relationship which could benefit the organization and at the same time provide promotion opportunities for the woman worker. Another problem which is quite prevalent in our society is the father-daughter relationship. Females are always considered as Daddys little girl (Vinnicombe Colwill, 1995). They are always pampered and not made independent as is the case with males. This problem creeps up into organizations as well when senior male mentors consider their young female apprentices as their daughters and continue to pamper them and not really make them independent enough to handle the work without the presence of the mentor himself. It is often heard that behind the success of every man, there is a woman. This belief has led to an inherent bias in peoples mind which makes them think that theres a hard working man with a woman assisting him. This is labeled as the the assistant-to effect (Vinnicombe Colwill, 1995). Here if there is a male mentor and a female apprentice, the roles are often seen shifting from a mentor-apprentice relationship to a worker-helper relationship where the apprentice does learn the work, but once again not well enough to take over the work of the mentor when hes no longer there. According to a study it has been proved that mentoring plays a major role in career development of men and women both. Studies have shown that 61% women who have made it to top management positions have had a mentor somewhere along their career path and out of these 99% admit that their mentor played an important role in their progress through the organizational hierarchy. (Johns Saks, 1996) Conclusion Although the participation rate of women in the labor force has increased over the years. Being only 43% in 1970 and rising to 61% in 2003 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, Fig. 2). The working conditions or the workplace still has to undergo some major changes before they are completely free of gender biased thinking. For the women to be on the same level as men in the workplace they will have to move on from the expressive roles that the functionalists argue as an important function of the society. According to Marx and the conflict perspective, it is the constant struggle between the proletariat and the bourgeois, in this case between the women and the men accordingly, which will lead to the necessary reforms being made in the workplace.

Grace Hopper received a PhD in mathematics from the Yale University. This was the time when she was still employed with Eckert Mauchly Computer Corporation that she came up with her original compiler work whic h was a novelty in those times. This compiler was later on named as the A compiler and its initial version was called as A-0. A conference by the name of CODASYL was held in 1959 which brought together computer experts and geniuses from the related industries and the government. Grace Hopper was appointed as the technical consultant of this committee which essentially laid the basis of COBOL. The new language took some of its ideas from the IBM equivalent by the name of COMTRAN. COBOL aimed to write programmes in a language which was more close to the English dictum than the machine oriented basis. This was the reason why COBOL was seen as the single most ubiquitous business language and is still considered so to this day.
